Mogao Cave 254 莫高第254号窟
A Central Pillar Cave of Buddhist Stories 中央塔柱佛传故事窟
Northern Wei Dynasty (386-584 A.D.) 北魏
Mogao Cave 254 is located in the middle section of the Mogao Grottoes North. It was built during the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-584 A.D.), which made it one of the earliest caves in Dunhuang. This cave showcases Western Indic features, a common characteristic of early Dunhuang caves. The central pillar defines its architecture style, which consists of an anterior hall for worshipping and a central stupa for circumambulation. Buddha niches are carved into the four walls of the stupa and the north and south walls of the cave. Mural paintings of Buddhist stories and preaching Buddhas decorate the three walls of the cave. The architectural and artistic styles of Cave 254 exemplified Western influences in the Dunhuang region around the time period.
